BoltTalk - Chargers Taking Small Steps

Chargers Taking Small Steps

The San Diego Chargers go into this weeks game against divisional rivals the Denver Broncos with a 5-1 record and looking in good shape again this season. But don't tell that to GM Nick Ilett who is not taking any game, or anything for granted this season.

With the big injury to QB Tom Brady at the end of week 4's win against the Dallas Cowboys, the Chargers and GM Nick Ilett did not know what to expect? And feared the worse for the rest of the season. Brady before getting hurt, had started the season in brilliant form having passed for 1,136 yards, and 7 TD's and just 2 INT's with a QB rating that still leads the league of 111.1.

So In has stepped rookie QB Rusty Smith and to say he has not put a foot wrong is all credit to him. So far Smith has passed for 540 yards in his 2 starts, and has thrown 5 TD's, and has just thrown for 1 INT and has a QB rating of 122.1. But while Smith has been impressive so far the Chargers, the Chargers are very keen not to let the young rookie QB get too carried away, as the Chargers and GM Nick Ilett know all to well that this can all change for a rookie QB in no time at all.

While the Chargers offence has continued clicking without Brady it is really the Chargers new 3-4 defense that needs a lot of credit. Rated the #1 overall defense so far this season, the Chargers 3-4 defense has stepped up and played just as GM Nick Ilett had hoped they would perform. While last years rookie sensation MLB Brandon Spikes stats may of dropped this season due to the move to the 3-4 defense, he along with FA pick up MLB Antonio Pierce have both been rock solid in the middle of the Chargers defense.

Another big reason for the Chargers defense being so tight this season is the combination of new CB's Antonio Cromartie, and Zackary Bowman, who have both only given up around 3.75 catches a game and also have 5 INT's between them. GM Nick Ilett went hard after both Cromartie and Bowman this past offseason, knowing they would make a great pair, and so far the results are showing this and the Chargers believe they have 2 of the best shutdown CB's in the league now.

So the next test for the Chargers before their bye week is a game against ex Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the Denver Broncos. So far Rivers is 0-2 against his ex team, and the Chargers will hoping this continues tomorrow. But in the meantime the Chargers will continue to keep taking small steps this season, in the hope of another playoff run.

On a side note, whispers have been emerging from the Chargers camp that the Chargers may be willing to trade QB Tom Brady at the end of the season. It looks like the Chargers may finally have lost patience with Brady's injury proneness, along with saving cap room. So the Chargers may well now be looking to continue to move forward with Rusty Smith at QB for the foreseeable future.

News is that the Chargers have already been contacted by 2 teams asking about Brady's services next season. If Brady does move? Or if he stays? We will have to wait and see.

BoltTalk - Chargers 2011 Draft Recap

Chargers 2011 Draft Recap

The San Diego Chargers came into this years draft with a few holes on there roster to fill and by the end of the draft the Chargers found themselves pretty set and happy with this years draft.
This is how the Chargers draft panned out after 2 exciting days.....

1.2 Draft Pick (Traded to the New York Jets for CB Antonio Cromartie)
The deal to trade the 1.2 draft pick for Cromartie made 100% sense for the Chargers bosses, as the deal was also seen as saving some much needed cap room, after the decision to match a large offer from the Packers for exposed FA CB Johnathan Joseph the night before the draft. Also this deal made sense for the Chargers as the Chargers had planned to draft rookie CB Walter Thurmond with the 1.2 draft pick. While the Chargers miss out on the talented Thurmond, they did save cap room along with getting a proven shutdown CB in Cromartie.

1.6 Draft Pick - HB Javarris James
A HB was not a major need for the Chargers coming into the draft, but when James was on the board still at 1.16, the Chargers decided to select James as more of a value selection. James had caught the eye of GM Nick Ilett in the All Star games when he rushed for a total of 373 yards in the 3 games, and had a rushing avrage of 6.0 yards per carry, along with 2 TD's.
James also proved in the games that he can go the distance as both of his TD's come of the back of a 92 yard TD run and a 67 yard TD run.

2.11 - Draft Pick - QB Rusty Smith
When first choice QB Matt Nichols was selected by the Arizona Cardinals just 6 picks before the Chargers selection, the Chargers had to look elsewhere and they drafted Smith. The Chargers scouts know that Smith may take a little bit of work with his awrness in the pocket, but the Chargers believe he has the good solid basics to be a decent backup QB to current QB Tom Brady. The Chargers also think that with time, along with some playing time, that Smith can also take over from Brady in the future.

4.1 - Draft Pick - DT Martin Tevaseu
The Chargers came into the draft knowing that they needed to get some starting DT's for the new season, The Chargers scouts liked the size and the decent STR and also the decent ACC of Tevaseu for such a big sized DT. The Chargers will start with Tevaseu along with other rookie DT Boo Robinson.

4.5 Draft Pick - Boo Robinson
Just four picks later the Chargers again went to DT and selected Robinson. While Robinson is not as big as Tevaseu, the Chargers scouts liked again what they saw in Robinson, and with his decent ACC and decent STR they believe that he will form a nice pairing with Tevaseu as the Chargers new DT's.

4.32 Draft Pick - FS Randy Phillips
Another need for the Chargers was to find a backup FS and special teams player. The Chargers liked very much Philips STR for a FS and think with his decent SPD he can be a nice asset for the Chargers roster and especially on special teams.

7.32 Draft Pick - TE Michael Hoomanawanui
Again another need for the Chargers was a TE to backup and also share playing time with 2nd year rookie TE Anthony McCoy. While Hoomanawanui is not really a quick receiving TE, he still has decent catching skills and is a very good run blocking TE and the Chargers are quite keen on this 7.32 selection.

BoltTalk - Chargers Agree To Deal The 1.2 Pick

With only hours to go before this years draft, news has come out from the San Diego Chargers draft room, that the San Diego Chargers have agreed to send the Chargers 1.2 draft pick to the New York Jets for CB Antonio Cromartie.

Cromartie, 27 years old, and 6' 2" tall, and with decent speed and agility, will again return to the Chargers and this time he will stay a Chargers player for seasons to come. The Move for Cromartie made sense for Chargers GM Nick Ilett to make, as the Chargers looked set to maybe take a CB with the 1.2 draft pick. This way the Chargers GM knows the Chargers will save the big money that a 1.2 would of demanded, and at the same time, the Chargers now get a shut down CB on a decent long term contract.

The deal is now just waiting trade approval from the trade committee.

If the deal does happen? The Chargers will start the new season with Antonio Cromartie, Zackary Bowman and Johnathan Joseph starting CB's. It is expected that the Chargers will talk further to veteran CB Quentin Jammer more in the next few days regarding his future.

BoltTalk - Chargers May Be Talking

It is being reported that the San Diego Chargers 'may' be talking too and 'entertaining' offers for the 1.2 draft pick in this years draft.
Who the teams are that may be talking to the Chargers is unknown to us at BoltTalk? But it is thought that the teams involved are from the AFC. This news may be on the back end of the Chargers decision to 'match' the 30m Salary & 10m bonus over 3 years offer made to talented CB Johnathan Joseph last night by the Green Bay Packers.

It is believed that the Chargers who themselves are looking at the draft at a few postions namely CB, RT, TE, and maybe QB, will not make any rash decisions before the teams scouts have had time to watch tonight's Rookie All Star games. It is believed the Chargers who are 'very keen' on 3 rookie prospects themselves, with the 1.2 draft pick, will then sit down and then base a decison on what's best for the team going forward.
