Cowboy Round-up 2010, Issue 3 |
I have been mystified the last two weeks with the on-field play and traveled to India to speak to the guru about what should be done with this team and I was told by the smartest man in the world "your team is not that good."
"There will be only highs and lows but no sustained winnings happening with the Cowboys this year" stated the Guru which dampened my spirits just a bit but I realized that what he told me I already knew.
The Cowboys are starting rookies that nobody really wanted or they would have been picked up. Two rookie WRs in Donald Jones and Stephen Williams lead the team in receiving while MLB Vincent Rey leads the league rookies in tackles. FS Anderson Russell, also a rookie starts in the secondary and the Cowboys sit at 3-2 with their latest victory over the struggling Vikings.
QB Romo had his best day as a Cowboys with four touchdowns and 344 yards including a 129.9 rating. RB Marion Barber ate up the Vikings defense rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie WR Stephen Williams led the Cowboys in receiving yards with 86 while old faithful WR Dexter Jackson, who played the slot WR in the game had 78 rec yards.
On defense this week, CB Terence Newman led the team for the first time this year in tackles with seven while the leader in tackles for the Cowboys - rookie Vincent Rey had five tackles and his first sack.
The vikings came to play but they seemed overmatched with what the Cowboys wanted to do throughout the game. Hopefully they find what they are looking for and turn their season around. |

Cowboys show fortitude against Giants with 33-18 win |
The Dallas Cowboys fresh off their victory against the Panthers gathered around the lockerroom and had a mid-week team meeting about their upcoming game with the NY Giants. Yes they are a division rival. Yes this game is only the 2nd game of the year. Yes we want to win this first game against the Giants. Yes we want to start off the year 2-0.
No this isn't a "back against the wall" game.
Both teams are still trying to figure out what type of team they are going to have down the stretch of this AAO season. However, the Cowboys came up with a beautifully played game where they forced 5 turnovers, held RB Jacobs to only 60 yards rushing and shut down the Giants passing attack holding the G-men to 245 yards passing on 42% completion pct.
Rookie WRs Donald Jones and Stephen Williams led the way with a combine 13 catches for 130 yards and no drop passes. RB Barber ran for 72 yards while QB Romo threw 12 of 16 passes for 136 yards and 2 TDs.
The defense was led by rookie MLB Rey who had 9 tackles, one up from last week when he led his team with 8 tackles. Another rookie, Safety Russell had 5 tackles and 1 deflection. The defense played well in this game and forced and pryed and tucked and just played scrappy the entire contest.
"We were proud of our rookies" said Coach Phillips. "We continue to build around these young men and with more playing time comes more experience and with more experience comes more confidence" he also added. The Cowboys now go into their bye week to rest up for an even longer season ahead. |

Cowboys deliver game to fans and city of Dallas |
Arlington, TX - Last year was a surprise, the offseason was a travesty, the draft yielded no-named wanna-be AAO superstars and the 1st game of the year - priceless.
After all that the organization went through, the team came out and delivered a win for their management, their fans and their city.
QB Romo back from an injury plagued season, hit the field running and threw for 140 yards and and 1 interception. RB Barber ran 24 times for 166 yards and two TDs easily becoming the MVP of the game.
The Cowboys started two rookie WRs Williams and Jones and Williams had a great game for a youngster who wasn't heavily recruited or on their draft boards.
Rookie MLB Vincent Rey led the veteran unit with 8 tackles and 2 deflections. The CB unit of Mathis and Newman had a total of 10 tackles and 4 deflections. DT Ratliff and DE Tapp both had sacks in the game.
Game Stats also include that the Panthers out gained the Cowboys in 1st downs with 18-10. They also converted 8 of 17 3rd down attempts while the Cowboys only converted 3 of 11.
The Panthers led the Cowboys in total yardage gaining 356 to the Cowboys 306. Both teams turned the ball over but the Panthers had 1 extra turnover. |

Cowboys Achieve Divisional Championship Game for 2nd Year |
The Dallas Cowboys out shined their own expectations in a 33-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles today. In a game where the Cowboys went 1-13 in third down conversions, WR Williams came alive with 121 yards receiving and 2 TDs while Johnnie Lee Higgins scored a TD and had 94 yards receiving.
Higgins has turned out to be a major contributor in the Cowboys offense. Once thought to be a starter turned kick returner back to starter in the playoffs, Higgins gives the Cowboys a home run threat every time he touches the ball. With 4 touchdowns in these playoffs through the air, he has sealed his name is Cowboy lore forever.
RB Marion Barber rushed for 141 yards and 1 TD while QB Romo kept a hot hand in helping the Cowboys win streak of 5 in a row since he last returned to the team.
As the Cowboys led 17-0 going into the 4th quarter, magical Donovan McNabb reached into the heavens and hailed down two TDs making the score 17-14. The the Cowboys came alive once again and scored two TDs which sealed the win.
CB Rashean Mathis led the team with two timely interceptions while CB Terrance Newman shut down his side with 6 tackles. LB Brooking had 5 tackles while LB Ben Leber (filling in for DeMarcus Ware) had 5 solid tackles in the game. DE Tapp led the team in sacks with 2 on McNabb.
The Cowboys now journey into familiar territory (NFC Championship Game) and look to the past to try to help them. For a team finishing 9-7 and making this far has got me smiling from ear to ear. You can't imagine the joy I am feeling reaching this spot and just to think I didn't think I was even going to make the playoffs.
I won't get too sentimental....not over yet. |

The Johnnie/Dexter Show Premieres In ATL for Wildcard Win |
WRs Higgins and Jackson, both who had their chances to become starters for the year and didn't live up expectations set forth by the GM and Head Coach shined in the rematch of the Atlanta Falcons who blew out the Cowboys the last time they played.
WR Higgins had 7 receptions for 187 yards and 3 TDs while WR Jackson who was a shinning beacon last year caught 4 passes for 122 and 1 TD. TE Bennett even got in on the party with 4 solid catches for 25 yards. RB Marion Barber rushed for 104 yards on 25 carries and didn't commit any turnovers.
The offensive line kept the Atlanta Falcons at bey all game long. QB Brennan who was hounded all 1st meeting only completing 9 passes for 98 yards and a 29.5 rating completed 9 passes once again but for 164 yards and 3 TDs. How games can change in a season but the youngster came through for us with this win.
LB Keith Brooking led the team in tackles with 12. LB Spencer had 8 tackles while CB Mathis had 7 tackles. Safety Gerald Sensabaugh who missed last year's playoffs had an interception in the game that helped turn the tide.
We move on gingerly but humble but being allowed to advance. |
