Big Blue finally breaks losing streak
Sukanya Krishnan, Sports Writer, Giants.com
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The Giants came off their week 5 bye where they placed two more players on IR, those players being WR Chad Ochocinco and DT Red Bryant. And in their stead, newcomers DT Adam Carriker who came from the Rams last week via trade and WR Reggie Wayne who was an unrestricted free agent since being released by the Baltimore Ravens.
Eli Manning played his best game so far to date as a NYG, completing 28 out of 56 attempts for 516 yards, 4 touchdowns and a single INT. Newcomer and vet receiver Reggie Wayne led the team in receptions with 9 and had 162 yards, Wayne also scored a TD.
Coach Schottenheimer issued the following statement at an impromptu press conference..
"Well the losing streak is finally stopped, but now we have to use this win as a morale booster and try to get back in the swing of things Still have a long way to go, but if the guys put forth the effort out there from now, we can probably salvage a season that started off quite rocky." |

Big Blue can't shake the blues ...
Sukanya Krishnan, Sports Writer, Giants.com
LANDOVER, MD. (AP) - The Giants expected a change once they signed veteran Chad Ochocinco to the roster, after putting Brandon Jacobs on IR for the rest of the season. But his new start with the Giants was cut extremely short (1 play!), as he left Fed Ex Field injured.
Joe McKnight who was named starter had a decent game rushing 15 times for 60 yards and a TD. Manning had his best game so far this season, so the Help Manning Project seemed to be off to a good start until the Chad injury.
Coach Schottenheimer issued the following statement at an impromptu press conference..
"I'm really beginning to think we're being tested by some unseen force this season. Our guys are dropping faster than panties in a strip club. We go into our bye for week 5, where we will get to try out some new options on the practice field as we try to get back it. It's not too late to turn things around, but first and foremost we need to stay healthy. The Manning project as we call it will not be detoured."
In other news, the Giants and Rams have to come to terms on defensive tackle Adam Carriker. The trade was agreed upon in principle before the start of week 4, but the trade was held off until the conclusion of the week and will be submitted to league officials for approval. With the addition of Carriker, it would give the Giants a strong force in the middle or off the edge as a defensive end. |

Jacobs season is over.. Enter the 2 Chad's
Sukanya Krishnan, Sports Writer, Giants.com
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - After losing starting TE Travis Beckum back in week 1, the Giants were dealt another blow to the roster when they lost starter Brandon Jacobs for 5 weeks due to a broken tailbone.
But with the Giants extremely limited cap room, Giant's general manager Maurice Heard had no choice but to put Jacobs on injured reserve in order to free up the necessary space to sign a halfback.
General Manager Heard on the Brandon Jacobs situation ...
"It has to be hard on him to hear this news, as his type of injury is not really that serious enough to pulled for an entire season, but I had to do what had to be done to rectify our current situation. I've spoken to Brandon about this already, and he understands what had to be done for the sake of the team. He was calm about it but I know he was upset, I would be too if I were in his shoes."
In other news, the Giants traded wide receiver Limas Sweed and in his place signed veteran receiver Chad Ochocinco. Chad Johnson was cut prior to the start of the 2011 preseason due to cap issues with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Number 85 brings a much needed veteran presence to the Giants receiving corp, and hopefully can help Manning progress which in turn would help the young receivers such as Nicks and Barden mature.
Chad Ochocinco on his being signed by the Giants ...
"Well this whole experience was humbling, I never expected to get cut from the Bengals. Traded yes, cut no. But that is behind me now, the New York Giants made a bold move in putting Brandon on ice, just to be able to sign me and I'm going to do all that I can to help the team, whether it's out on the field, or sideline so that Brandon's sacrifice won't be in vain."
The New York Giants also signed 3rd year pro HB Chad Simpson to the roster. He will take over as the kick/punt return specialist as HB Joe McKnight will be starting in Jacob's place.
Coach Schottenheimer issued the following statement regarding Joe McKnight's activation at starter..
"This season will be huge for Joe to show us what's he's made of. Up to this point he's been the utility guy for us. He's played fullback, halfback, receiver, kick/punt return guy. Now it's time for him to be the main guy. We have some big games coming up, next week a division game against the Redskins, then the Buccaneers, who are off to a great start this season, followed by the Eagles, so we're going to need him, and everyone else to step up if we expect to end this season on a good note." |

Evaluation has started ....
Sukanya Krishnan, Sports Writer, Giants.com
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Maybe those were imposters in the Giants' uniforms for most of the season. That seems as good an explanation as any for what happened to the Giants in 2010.
"I think the real issue right now for our football team is a lack of identity," said Schottenheimer, whose team finished 8-8 and in 4th place in the NFC East. "We have lost our identity in terms of who we are. We are a football team that has always prided itself on the physical aspect of the game, which is running the ball and stopping the run."
General manager Maurice Heard, who followed Schottenheimer to the podium at the Timex Performance Center, echoed those sentiments, though he phrased it differently.
"What's our identity?" Heard said. "We call ourselves a power running football team and we were not that. Our mistake was trying to be a team that we're not. Brandon Jacobs is probably our greatest weapon on the offense and we were not utilizing him as we should of been. We're not a pass happy team, we're a pound on the ground, physical team. Brandon had some hot flashes during the season, primarily in the 49ers and Rams game. But for most part of the season we didn't run the ball like we should of. What is the cause of that? Is it the offensive line, is it the running backs, what is it? Whatever it is, we need to correct it. "
Schottenheimer and Heard discussed many other issues in their back-to-back news conferences. We'll first hear from the coach:
*On the season as a whole:
"Our 8-8 record is certainly not what we envisioned or expected this year. We are greatly disappointed by this in all areas. ... As I told our team today, as I went over the season with them, there is no one looking to point the blame at any one area. This is a team, we talk about ourselves as a team, we talk about ourselves as one. There is a lot of frustration as far as trying to put your finger on the answers, and we are going to try and solve some of that. We are going to evaluate everything, we have begun to do that at this point in time."
*On how the team can regain its confidence and swagger:
"Execution, production, play well - it's within us," Schottenheimer said. "That part of it has to re-emerge. ... We need a little help here and there, there's no question, but every team does. But that's the execution part and we have to regain it. We will get that back, but that is not easy. We are not just standing here talking about it, you have to go do it."
And now for some thoughts from Heard:
*His thoughts on the season:
"We're disappointed about the inconsistencies of the season and the up and down play that we had," Heard said. "In the beginning of the season we thought we had a great looking roster, thought we were well on our way considering we were 5-3 going into our bye week. There are a lot of things that happened that caused us to end up 8-8, which is very disappointing for everybody involved, for myself, for our coaches, for our players, for our owners. It is very disappointing that we are in this situation right now. But we are here, and all we can do now is move on. We have some things that we need to address and correct. We will take the positive things we can take out of this season and move forward. We will try to correct all the negative things that happened during this season."
*On what assurances he would give to Giants fans that the team will return to the AAO's group of elite teams:
"We have pride here," Heard said. "I think the players are embarrassed about what happened the last couple of weeks. I am embarrassed about what happened. Our owners are embarrassed about what happened, our coaches. Everybody is embarrassed that is involved with this situation. This is not our standard. We are 8-8, that is not who we are. We don't want that. We reject that. We are going to make every effort to correct that. That is all I can say." |

Giants Lose 3 Straight Games .. Manning BENCHED.
Sukanya Krishnan, Sports Writer, Giants.com
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - After what started off to be a promising season for the New York Giants, they came into this weeks game with little hope of winning against the visiting Arizona Cardinals. And as expected the Giants once again played horribly on offense, despite the defensive efforts to keep them in the game.
Coach Schottenheimer issued the following statement following the game:
"This season is pretty much a wrap, the offense as a whole hasn't been playing up to expectations. The passing game has been poor, as well as our rushing game. I can't seem to figure it out, but it's time to let someone else take charge behind center."
"Whether it will be Trent or Josh starting next week against the Eagles, it is yet to be decided on, but as far as I am concerned, Eli is DONE for the rest of this season. Player progress is being noted and those that fail, should expect to be on the block in the upcoming offseason." |
