Redskins Offseason Summary |
This offseason has seen the Redskins transforming their squad. Several high profile players have been shown the door by GM Gill.
The following have been axed:
HB Clinton Portis
DE Alex Brown
RT Nick Kaczur
QB Cleo Lemon
DT Junior Siavii
CB Fred Smoot
DE Andre Carter
C Duke Preston
MLB London Fletcher
Player traded:
OLB Brian Orakpo
WR Malcolm Kelly
WR Devin Thomas
In the meantime the Skins have added to their squad with a mixture of veterans and younger players.
Players in:
DT Kris Jenkins
LOLB Darnell Bing
RG Roberto Garza
C Jamaal Jackson
DE Julius Peppers
WR Kevin Curtis
The Redskins can look forward to the draft again this season with 2 x 1st round picks along with a 2nd round pick and 2 x 4th round picks.
With the loss of Orakpo from the LB corp the Skins will be eager to bring in a player or 2 to compete for a starting place. Will GM Gill go with Bing on the left? It’s a gamble, but Bing has everything GM Gill likes in a LB. Bing’s only downside is his lack of awareness. But by judging by GM Gills starting MLB Ellerbe, Gill isn’t afraid of putting in players like this to the test.
Going forward to next season the Skins look to be heading in the right direction. The GM has managed the salary cap with tremendous aptitude and guile. Allowing for players like Peppers, Jenkins, Garza, Jackson and Curtis to come into the squad and no doubt cement their starting positions respectively. As above along with the LB position that requires addressing, the Skins will look to the draft for a DE, WR, DT and HB. Should there be a decent QB going late in the draft they may look to bring him in to back up QB Campbell.
Last year’s rookies CB Robinson and HB Dixon came through with flying colours. Robinson ended with 2 INT’s, 65 Tackles. While Dixon gaining more than 1100 yards with 3TD’s rushing and 151yds and 1TD receiving. WR Dezmon Briscoe missed most of last season injured but showed he had what it takes to compete in the games he started and amassed 2 TD catches without a drop in 18 receptions.
Strengths for next season:
With the only gamble for next season on the OL seeing Randy Thomas switch to RT, the offensive line looks to be a lot stronger than last season. LT Samuels – LG Dockery – C Jackson – RG Garza – RT Thomas. The TE position is interesting as last year’s starting TE Davis will once again put pressure on Chris Cooley for the starter position. As long as there is protection for Campbell and holes open for Dixon the Skins can move the ball next season better than they did last season.
On Defense the strengths lie in the front 4. With possibly the best 2 DT’s in the game with Haynesworth and Jenkins add to that DE Peppers the line looks strong. DB’s Robinson, Hall and Landry will look to create mayhem in the backfield with turnovers.
Weaknesses for next season:
As above we know about the LB’s and the lack of experience could be a major factor. QB Campbell needs to learn to sit in the pocket more and not to panic and set off running blindly into waiting defenders arms. He hopefully has the line to protect him. If he decides to take off again without looking downfield or throwing it away when he has time, the Skins could give up the ball to easily, making the Defense play to many minutes on the field. Kicker Nugent needs to improve his record of kicking but can not see this happen and once again he has the ability to miss the easy kicks and put away the hard 1s.
Season 1 = 8-8
Season 2 = 9-7
Season 3 = ??? – Hopefully improve on the previous seasons.
1’s to watch for next season – MLB Ellerbe and WR Curtis on Offense. DE Peppers and CB Robinson on Defense |

Vet saddened to leave..... |
Casey Rabach 32, has been released by the Washington Redskins it was confirmed earlier today.
The Centres position in the team was under scrutiny when the Skins drafted Boston College's Matt Tennant. It is to believed that there isn't much difference between the 2 players after Tennant impressed in practice and with the cap as tight as it is the sensible move was to let Rabach go.
Can Tennant fill the boots of the very popular Casey Rabach? Time will tell, but with time on Tennants side the answer can only be a yes.
With Free Agency open I can confirm that Washington are holding talks with 6 players. GM Darren Gill stated that the 6 we are talking to are players that are interested in joining the Skins and are looking forward to putting pen to paper.
No names have been revealed as the agents dealing with negotiations wanted the players to remain completely anonymous. |

Redskins THE Draft |
Patrick Robinson - Florida State (HT: 5-11¼ - WT: 190 - 40: 4.46)
With the CB talent dwindling at Washington saw the Skins go for Florida States Corner and playmaker Patrick Robinson. Early signs as him coming straight into the squad as the #2 CB. At 23 years of age Robinson is going to learn the Skins system quickly.
Anthony Dixon - Mississippi State (HT: 6-0¾ - WT: 233 - 40: 4.65
Miss State's HB Dixon was recommended by close friend Jamal Lewis, he said of Dixon that he was like Lewis but Dixon was good. Dixon has the reputation of a steamroller in college, but with suspect hands which can lead to fumbles. I can see Dixon becoming a firm fan favourite in Washington.
Reggie Stephens - Iowa State (HT: 6-2⅝ - WT: 322)
OG Stephens from Iowa State is not a common name throught college worldom, but Stephens impressed in the Skins drills he was put through earlier. Stephens could well become a good player in 2-3 seasons.
Matt Tennant - Boston College (HT: 6-4½ - WT: 300 - 40: 5.16)
Boston College's Matt Tennant's claim to fame is that he's no relation to former Dr Who David Tennant. Tennant is a steady player who will get the job done. Will improve with every game he plays.
Kansas (HT: 6-2 - WT: 207 - 40: 4.64)
Who would have thunk it that Kansas's WR Briscoe would still be available so late in the draft. An outstanding prosepect will see him push the Skins WR's for a start. |

Watch Portis in TD of season? as Skins suck AGAIN..... |
Todd Collins has finished his career with the Washington Redskins.
Thats the rumour coming out of Washington this evening. The Redskins have played as poor for past month or so.
No impact on the Offense and now it's starting to effect a once strong Defense.
Big changes are expected to happen at the end of the season with not only players going but most of the coaching staff.
On a bright notr the highlight reel moment of the game and maybe the season when Clinton Portis broke 7 tacklers to score an amazing TD.
Check this highlight out..................
